Pasting

Clicking a card doesn't paste it into the original app
  1. Click the insertion point in the destination app, then open PasteDot.
  2. Check paste permissions in PasteDot Settings → General. Follow the instructions to grant access in System Settings.
  3. Return to the destination app and try pasting again.

You can also copy the card, return to the destination, and press ⌘ V. If you replaced the app bundle or changed its location, check that system permissions apply to the copy of PasteDot currently running.

How do I resume an interrupted paste queue?

Open the destination document again, click the insertion point, and retry the current item. You can also skip it or end the queue. Check the document before retrying to avoid pasting an item twice.

File access

The file card is still there, but previewing or pasting fails

A file card stores the location of the original file, not a backup. First check that the file is still on this Mac or a connected drive.

If access is required, choose “Reselect File” in the preview or context menu, select the same original file or folder, and try again. If the original moved, copy it again. A card cannot restore a deleted original. Access may need to be granted again after restarting the app or moving to another Mac.

AI features

How do I start using Ask AI?
  1. In Settings → Models, add the endpoint URL, model name, and API key if needed for an OpenAI-compatible service.
  2. Test the connection and save. The test does not include your copy history.
  3. Return to the card list, select your material, and choose Ask AI. Check the receiving service and selected content before sending.

The provider sets service fees and limits. For details on what is sent and how to revoke permission, see the Privacy policy.

AI shows an error or never responds

Cancel the request, then check the endpoint URL, model name, API key, and service quota. Remote endpoints must use HTTPS; a local service may use localhost HTTP. Before sending images, check that the model supports them and enable image support in its settings.

If there is too much material, select fewer items or check the model's context settings before trying again.

Pasting an answer fails, or I want to save it

Check that the original app is running, the insertion point is editable, and PasteDot has paste permission. The answer is kept after a failed paste. You can retry, or copy it and paste manually.

Choose “Save as Card” for an answer you want to keep. Conversations live only in the current window and are discarded when it closes. A hidden window can be reopened from the menu bar.

History & privacy

How do I stop recording content from an app?

Add it to the exclusion list in Settings → Privacy. This affects future copies only; delete existing items separately. You can also pause capture temporarily.

How do I clear history, API keys, or permissions?

History and favorites are managed separately. End any paste queue and close AI conversations before clearing. “Delete Permanently” skips the undo period.

AI sending permission and file access permission can each be cleared in Settings → Privacy. To delete an API key, remove the saved key in the model settings and save, then delete the model configuration. Existing file access may remain valid for the current session after permission is cleared; after a restart, it will be requested again when needed.

Material already sent to a model service must be handled under that service's policy. Learn more in Data management and deletion.

Is iCloud sync available?

Sync is off by default. Availability is shown in your installed version's settings. The App Store edition uses an iCloud private database; the website edition uses iCloud Drive. Temporary AI conversations and API keys are not synced with history. Only file references sync; originals and access permissions stay on this Mac. Turning sync off does not delete existing cloud records. Local data does not automatically migrate between the website and App Store editions.
